Diogo Gaio Chaves (1997), from Castelo de Vide, Portugal, began his musical education at Banda União Artística, where he started performing as a trumpet player. He studied with Adriano Franco and João César at “Escola de Artes do Norte Alentejano”, completing the Basic Music Course in Trumpet (2013).
In 2015 he moved to Lisbon and enrolled in the National Conservatory, finishing the Secondary Music Course in Composition in the class of Daniel Schvetz (2019). In the same year he reenrolled in the Voice Course, having studied with António Wagner Diniz until 2022 and, since then, with Manuela de Sá.
Regarding his choir and chamber music experience at the National Conservatory, he was part of the choir “Musaico” from 2017 to 2023 (dir. Tiago Marques); of the early music ensemble “L’Heure du Thé” between 2021 and 2022 (dir. Helena Raposo) and has also been part of Art Song Duos since 2020 (dir. António Wagner Diniz, José Manuel Brandão, and Daniela Ignazzitto) and of the Opera Studio since 2021 (dir. Ana Paula Russo, José Brandão, and Rúben Saints).
In parallel to his music education, he finished a bachelor’s degree in International Relations at ISCSP – University of Lisbon (2018), and a post-graduation in Aesthetics and Artistic Studies – Musical Arts and Musicology at FCSH – NOVA University of Lisbon (2019). Currently, he is pursuing a master’s degree in Historical Musicology at FCSH, with the thesis “Análise, Edição Prática e Proposta de Encenação de Ópera Portuguesa do Século XVIII: La Vera Costanza – Dramma Giocoso de Jerónimo Francisco de Lima (1785 e 1789)” under the supervision of João Pedro Cachopo. He is a collaborator of CESEM – Research Centre for Sociology and Aesthetics of Music, being a part of the Music, Critical Theory and Communication Research Group, and of the Opera Studies Research Cluster.
He joined Nova Era Vocal Ensemble in January 2022, as a baritone, and has also collaborated writing programme notes, translations and music score transcriptions.
